Design duo Barber Osgerby has taken home the top prize at the Design Museum’s Awards for their interpretation of the Olympic Torch. Beating out stiff competitors like Foster + Partners and Mary Katrantzou, Osgerby’s design was applauded for its supremely functional, lightweight form, striking aesthetic, and the advanced technology used to create it. Crafted from aluminum alloy meant for the aerospace and automobile industries, the torch contains 8,000 small holes to indicate the number of people that will carry the beacon on its journey to the London Olympics using a new laser-cutting technology called Fire on the Fly. The esteemed panel of judges included Henrietta Thompson, culture pundits Evgeny Lebedev and Sir George Iacobescu, and Dutch designer Hella Jongerius. The award is truly a testament to Barber Osgerby’s ingenuity.
